I joined Highfields at the beginning of year eleven, after four unhappy years at a local comprehensive. Bullying had seriously affected my education and consequently I was very behind in my GCSE preparation. However, at Highfields I flourished. I found the environment friendly and supportive and with the help of the teachers I soon caught up. I left the school the following June with eight good GCSEs.

In the September of that year I started studying for my A-levels at Cornwall College. After two years of hard work I gained my A-levels in English, Law and Psychology and won a place at Exeter University to read English. I elected to study at the new Cornwall campus and after three years I had completed my BA Hons degree, gaining a good 2:1.

I was unsure of which career to pursue so my tutor suggested I stay at university for another year to take a Masters programme. I followed her advice and graduated with my Masters in January after the hardest year of study I had ever experienced.

Although extremely challenging, the extra year provided me with a deeper knowledge of my subject and convinced me that teaching was the path I wanted to take.

I now intend to go on and train as a teacher. However, none of this would have been possible without the help and encouragement of the teachers at Highfields.
