HIGHFLYER 4TH NOVEMBER 2011
HALLOWEEN PARTY
A good time was had by all! The magic show by Alan Jones was really amazing! The pumpkin carving competition and fancy dress was also judged by Alan. He found it incredibly hard to decide the winners because the standard was very high. Thank you to everyone who came and made it such a success.
MAGIC4LEARNING CLUB
Alan Jones has offered the school the opportunity of an after-school club which would be based on ‘a new education project which brings together the FUN of learning, the POWER of collaboration and the ENJOYMENT of learning.’ If you are interested, please go on the following link magic4learning.com to find out more information and contact the school office if you like what you see so we can decide if the club would be viable. NB. A small charge would have to be made to cover the costs of the club.
NEW COMPUTERS
With the old computers becoming more unreliable by the day, Mrs Haddy decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and lease a new set of computers using a local firm called ‘Truro Computers’. Over the half term holiday the new set of custom built computers were installed in the ICT area. With 21.5 inch touch screens they certainly are an exciting improvement! If you are able, please come in to have a look.
CHEESE AND WINE EVENING
THURSDAY, 24TH NOVEMBER AT 7PM
All parents are invited to this informal gathering of parents and teachers which will include the presentation of GCSE certificates to last year’s year 11, some of the present year 11 and some year 10 pupils. Your support will be very much appreciated so please do try to come along to this special event.
MORRISON’S VOUCHERS
These will need to be sent off next week so if you have any still to hand in, please do so as soon as possible!
200 CLUB
The first draw took place on Monday:
1st prize Mr John Richards 2nd prize Mrs Sally Jeffery 3rd prize Mrs Pascoe
There are still numbers for sale so if you would like to buy one for the rest of the year, please contact the school office as soon as possible.
HEATING UPDATE
It does not look likely that there will be any heating in the next couple of weeks. However, this is not an excuse to stop wearing school uniform altogether! School sweatshirts must be worn and other layers either below them or on top of them may be allowed. The school is actually still quite warm and as plenty of heaters have been provided by the Council, don’t let your children try to persuade you otherwise!
GCSE Results Day
GCSE success at Highfields School
Pupils at Highfields School are celebrating after they achieved a 65 per cent A* to C pass rate.
One of the highlights was a Year 10 pupil gaining an A* in maths a year after she gained an A* in statistics.
Headteacher Mary Haddy, said: “We’re very proud of the pupils and so pleased with the results, which really stand out for themselves.
“There have been some real highlights and we gained 100 per cent A* to C pass rate for English literature, history, ICT, Spanish, physics and music.
“As you can see for such a small establishment, once again we’ve managed to achieve excellent results!”
We are also celebrating a 50 per cent A* to C pass rate for Year 9 pupils taking the RE short course.
Ragbag Recycling
We are almost ready to send off our final load for this school year. If anyone has any textiles they no longer need please bring them in ASAP.
Solar Power Challenge- 23rd June
Year 10 took part in a challenge organised by Cornwall College and held at RAF St Morgan. Pupils had to deisgn and build a solar powered car with various restraints- including time!
Street Scene team- Cornwall Council, Street Surfing- 21st June
We had the pleasure of a demonstration and the chance to have a go at street surfing. They have offered to run an after school club with a 10 week course costing £50 if there is enough uptake. This also includes the use of all equipment. Further detals can be obtained from the school, dates are still to be confirmed.
Street Scene will also be returning on the last day of term- 8th July to give us a demostration on street dancing. Watch this space for updates!
